Steel pipes can generally be divided into two types: seamless steel pipes and welded pipes. Although these two types of steel pipes are made of steel materials, their production processes and performance characteristics are different. In many fields, seamless steel pipes and welded pipes can be used, but their scope of application is different. Below I will introduce in detail the difference between seamless and welded steel pipes.
Seamless steel pipe
Seamless steel pipes are made by cold drawing, cold rolling or hot rolling. Some seamless steel pipes need to go through multiple processes, such as pickling, rust removal, rolling, annealing, etc., before they can be finally produced.
Seamless steel pipes are characterized by smooth internal and external surfaces, no welds, high density, high strength, can withstand high pressure, and are relatively stable in structure. In addition, compared with ordinary welded pipes, seamless steel pipes have better corrosion resistance.
Seamless steel pipes are often used in petroleum, chemical industry, aviation, military and other fields, because these fields have very high quality requirements for steel pipes. If steel pipes of substandard quality are used, it may cause safety hazards to personnel and equipment.
Welded pipe
Welded pipes are made by welding steel plates or steel strips into pipes using a welding process. Welded pipes are cheaper than seamless steel pipes, but are slightly inferior in quality.
The characteristic of welded pipes is that the internal and external surfaces are relatively smooth. Because some oxides, metal slag and other substances are mixed during the welding process, the quality of the welds is relatively poor. And the strength of welded pipes is sometimes slightly lower than seamless steel pipes.
Welded pipes are widely used in construction, machinery manufacturing, bridges, automobile manufacturing and other fields. Because the performance requirements for steel pipes in these fields are not as stringent as those in petroleum, chemical industry and other fields, welded pipes can also meet the needs.
Comparison between seamless steel pipe and welded pipe
There are some differences in performance and application fields between seamless steel pipes and welded pipes. Below I will compare them from several aspects.
1. Production process: Seamless steel pipes are made through rolling, drawing and other processes, while welded pipes are made by welding steel plates or steel strips into pipes through welding processes.
2. Quality: Seamless steel pipes are generally of higher quality than welded pipes, and seamless steel pipes also have better corrosion resistance.
3. Price: Welded pipes are usually cheaper than seamless steel pipes.
4. Application fields: Seamless steel pipes are mainly used in petroleum, chemical industry, aviation, military industry and other fields, while welded pipes are widely used in construction, machinery manufacturing, bridges, automobile manufacturing and other fields.
In short, seamless steel pipes and welded pipes have their own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of which steel pipe to choose depends on actual needs. If you have a higher budget in terms of price and higher quality requirements, you can consider using seamless steel pipes. And if there is a price limit, welded pipes are suitable.
