Introduction to Steel Billets: Advantages, Applications & Manufacturing Process

Introduction to billet

Steel billet is a product obtained by casting molten steel produced in a steel-making furnace. It is a very important raw material in the steel industry and the basis for making steel products. In terms of manufacturing technology, steel billets can be mainly divided into continuous casting billets and die casting billets, among which the die casting process has been basically eliminated. The shape of steel billets is mainly divided into slabs and square billets. The former has a larger cross-section width and height ratio and is mainly used to roll plates; the latter has equal or little difference in cross-section width and height and is mainly used to roll steel sections and wire rods. .

The quality and specifications of the steel billet have a critical impact on the performance and use of the final steel. Its production generally goes through processes such as ironmaking, steelmaking, and casting. Through hot rolling, cold rolling, forging, drawing and other processing techniques, various specifications of steel plates, steel pipes, steel coils and other products can be produced.

Advantages of billet

1. Stable composition: During the production process of steel billets, parameters such as furnace temperature and alloy addition amount can be controlled through various means, so that the composition of molten steel changes little and the composition is stable.

2. Controllable quality: Equipment such as furnace temperature and converter chemical analyzer can monitor molten steel in real time, ensuring controllable quality of steel billets.

3. Low carbon content: The steel billets produced by electric furnace smelting have the characteristics of low carbon content, which reduces subsequent processing costs and ensures the production of high-quality seamless steel pipes and other steel products.

4. Energy saving and environmental protection: Using electricity as the main energy source, compared with other smelting methods, waste gas emissions and energy consumption are low, and it is more environmentally friendly and energy-saving.

Application of steel billet

Steel billets are widely used in many fields, including but not limited to:

1. Construction field: Steel billets are widely used in building structures, such as steel bars, steel beams, steel plates, etc. Because steel has the characteristics of high strength, lightweight, and easy processing, it is often used to replace traditional brick-concrete structures.

2. Machinery manufacturing field: Steel billet is also one of the important materials for manufacturing machinery and equipment, such as bearings, gears, machine parts, etc. During these manufacturing processes, steel billets need to be processed into different shapes of steel, such as round steel, flat steel, angle steel, etc.

3. Automobile industry: Safety, lightweight and energy saving are the three main goals in automobile manufacturing. Therefore, the advantages of steel as an automobile material are becoming more and more obvious. Steel billet is one of the important raw materials for automobile steel and is used to manufacture body, chassis and other components.

4. Ship manufacturing: Steel billets are also used in ship manufacturing, such as hulls, ship plates, etc. Its high strength and corrosion resistance make it a key material in shipbuilding.

To sum up, steel billet, as an important raw material in the steel industry, has the advantages of stable composition, controllable quality, low carbon content, energy saving and environmental protection, and is widely used in construction, machinery manufacturing, automobile industry, shipbuilding and other fields.
