U.S. DOE Injects $62M into Clean Hydrogen R&D for Greener Energy Future

Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it will invest approximately US$62 million in 20 projects in 15 states to carry out research, development, demonstration and application of "clean hydrogen" technology.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) manages selected specific projects covering the following five thematic areas: Standardized hydrogen refueling stations of the future (investment of $40 million, including 4 projects), Hydrogen for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles Fuel components (investment of US$8.5 million, including 4 projects), achieving licensing certification and safe hydrogen deployment (investment of US$7 million, including 7 projects), hydrogen fuel cell powered port equipment (investment of US$2.5 million, including 1 project) ), Community Engagement for Equitable Hydrogen Technologies (investment of US$3.9 million, including 4 projects).

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm emphasized that hydrogen fuel is critical to reducing emissions in the most energy-intensive and polluting sectors of the economy and will create new economic opportunities for the United States. The U.S. Department of Energy will also support local governments in actively establishing a “local hydrogen energy licensing system.”

The goal set by the Biden administration in the United States is to reduce the country's greenhouse gas emissions by 50% to 52% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Even in the industrial and transportation sectors where emission reductions are difficult, it is expected to reduce carbon emissions through the use of clean hydrogen energy. In June 2023, the United States launched the "National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap." This investment initiative is in accordance with this roadmap to promote the use of clean hydrogen energy through the development and application of various equipment, especially in the transportation field.
